I can understand eternity. Even though I am living in an era where every living thing dies and every event ends, I can still grasp the concept of an unending world. What I have a difficult time understanding, however, is how something or someone didn’t have a beginning. Have you ever thought about it? Can you wrap your mind around the fact that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit have always existed? It’s a challenging fact, but it’s true, nonetheless.

In the first chapter of the Bible, we encounter all three persons of the Godhead. God the Father is in verse one; the Holy Spirit is in verse two; and an obvious reference to Jesus is in verses 26 and 27. Before God said, “Let there be light,” He, and His Son, and His Spirit existed. We usually don’t think of Jesus being present in creation, and we almost never consider that the Holy Spirit was there as well. Other passages confirm this fact. Job 33:4: “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” The psalmist references the renewed seasons and writes, “When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground” (Psalm 104:30).

When you consider the timelessness of the Godhead, think of their activities this way. In the Old Testament, God the Father steps forward and speaks directly to the patriarchs and gives Moses the law, while Jesus and the Holy Spirit are in the background. In the Gospels, Jesus steps forward and dies for the sins of the world, while God the Father and the Holy Spirit are assisting Jesus in His ministry. Starting from the book of Acts and extending until Jesus returns to take us home, the Holy Spirit has stepped forward to lead us in sanctification, while the Father and the Son prepare a place for us in Heaven. All three have been present since the beginning of time, but each play prominent roles in different eras of history. All three are active today, but each fulfills different responsibilities in the process of redeeming man.

Today, I will…be thankful that the same Holy Spirit that was present at creation is present in my life.
