TODAY’S SCRIPTURE Psalm 33:6-9

The mighty works of God are wrought by the all-powerful Word of God. God creates, destroys, and brings into being simply by speaking. Over and over Genesis 1 says, “And God said, ‘Let there be…’ And there was….” David observes, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host…. For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm” (Psalm 33:6, 9).

Peter on Pentecost says:

God raised Him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it. For David says concerning Him, “I saw the Lord always before me, for He is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. For You will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let Your Holy One see corruption.” (Acts 2:24-27)

Peter is saying death could not hold Jesus because God said He would be raised.

God illustrates:

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes out from My mouth; it shall not return to Me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:10-11)

God the Son restores life to paralyzed legs, forgives sins, restores sight to the blind, and raises the dead: all at the command of His Word – “Talitha cumi” (“Little girl, I say to you, arise”) and “Lazarus, come out.” Brother Marshall Keeble said correctly, “If Jesus had not called Lazarus by name, everybody in the cemetery would have come out.”

The Gospel faithfully preached is the same powerful Word. It brings spiritual life to the spiritually dead. Jesus says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” (John 5:25)

Our task is to faithfully preach His powerful Word.

Today I will…read Genesis 1 and underline the phrase, “And God said” each time I see it. Then I will spend time in prayer, thanking God for the power of His words.
